Answers to Your Questions

What Does the Curriculum Include?2026-07-05T15:43:29-04:00

Because traditional Korean Mu Sul is a complete system, your training in the dojahng (training area) covers a diverse range of skills.  Some of these concepts or enhanced versions of these concepts are introduced at more advanced stages of your training:

  • Striking and Kicking: Precision hand strikes, blocks, and dynamic traditional kicking techniques.

  • Joint Locks and Throws: Leveraging body mechanics and pressure points for close-range self-defense and redirection.

  • Traditional Forms: Choreographed patterns of movements that build focus, balance, muscle memory, and fluid power.

  • Traditional Weaponry: Advanced students learn the discipline and coordination required for traditional martial arts weapons, such as the jul bong and staff.

The Philosophy: Wearing the dobok (uniform) reflects a commitment to personal growth, mental discipline, and mutual respect. We train the mind just as much as the body, focusing on patience, focus, and integrity rather than aggressive competition.

What type of martial arts is taught at Clemson Martial Arts?2026-07-05T15:39:25-04:00

We teach traditional Korean Mu Sul (martial arts), specifically focusing on a comprehensive, traditional system that dates back through centuries of Korean history.

Rather than focusing on just one narrow aspect of combat—like sport sparring or modern point-fighting—our curriculum covers the entire spectrum of martial arts. This well-rounded approach ensures that students of all ages learn a complete art form.

What equipment or uniform do we need on day one?2026-07-05T15:11:50-04:00

For your very first trial class, just wear comfortable, athletic clothing (like a t-shirt and sweatpants). Once enrolled, we will provide you with your official uniform (Dobok) and guide you through any sparring or protective gear needed as you advance.

Am I too old to start martial arts?2026-07-05T15:35:51-04:00

The short answer: Absolutely not.

The longer answer: It is a very common myth that martial arts are strictly for energetic kids or elite twenty-year-olds. In reality, people start their martial arts journey in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and well beyond. Martial arts is an individual journey practiced within a community; you are never competing against a clock or anyone else’s timeline—only working to improve yourself from the day before.

Are there any opportunities to train with my child?2026-07-05T15:10:00-04:00

Teenagers and adults actually typically train together in the Adult/Teen program, so yes!  For other age groups, we offer family class sessions (Saturday at 9 a.m.) that bring together multiple age grounds.  Also, as you both progress, Intermediate and Advanced classes bring together students of all ages that are at the current level of advancement.

How does the 12-month training program work?2026-07-05T15:10:55-04:00

Martial arts is a long-term journey of self-improvement. Our 12-month program provides a comprehensive, structured curriculum that ensures you progress from basic coordination to high-level mastery. It ensures consistency, which is where real transformation happens.

Do I (or my child) need prior martial arts experience?2026-07-05T15:07:03-04:00

Absolutely not!  Our programs are designed for participants of all skill levels, but the general expectation is that most students will be completely new to martial arts.
