Tiny Tigers (Ages 3–6)

Focus on fundamental motor skills, following directions, sharing, and basic coordination in a fun, playful environment.

Bridging early childhood and youth training. Focuses on attention span, self-control, playground safety, and basic martial arts forms.

Did you know that your elementary age child can participate in martial arts training at two area after-school care programs?  ASC martial arts uses similar training routines as our Tiny Tigers and Lil’ Dragons programs, making it a great way to start martial arts!  Don’t forget that you must register with the Clemson Elementary or Central-Clemson Rec Center after school care program and with Clemson Martial Arts!

What is the ideal age for a child to start training?2026-07-05T15:45:45-04:00

Most of our youngest students find their footing between 3 and 6 years old. This is a fantastic developmental window where kids possess the physical coordination to learn basic movements and the cognitive ability to follow a structured group setting, while still being young enough to absorb habits like focus and respect naturally.

  • For the 3-6 crowd: We developed our Tiny Tigers program. It swaps rigid, long drills for fast-paced, movement-heavy games that channel big energy into foundational listening skills.

  • For developing kids (6-8): More structure and traditional martial arts techniques are introduced in our Lil’ Dragons program.  While the emphasis is still FUN, we also begin to master more traditional Korean martial arts techniques.
  • For older kids (7 to teens): You haven’t missed a thing. We regularly welcome absolute beginners at age 7, 11, or 14 who progress rapidly because they can grasp the concepts quickly.

We don’t believe in locking families into long-term commitments before they know if our culture is the right fit. We have several trial options available to to give you a chance to see how our instructors interact with your child, experience the atmosphere of the school, and make sure your child loves it before making any financial decisions.

Teenagers and adults actually typically train together in the Adult/Teen program, so yes!  For other age groups, we offer family class sessions (Saturday at 9 a.m.) that bring together multiple age grounds.  Also, as you both progress, Intermediate and Advanced classes bring together students of all ages that are at the current level of advancement.

Many parents first walk through our doors looking for a physical activity or basic self-defense. While our students absolutely learn practical martial arts, the real transformation happens from the inside out. We use the mat to teach life skills that team sports often miss.

Instead of just telling kids they are doing a great job, we teach them how to earn their progress. Your child will develop a completely new relationship with challenge. They learn how to handle frustration when a technique is difficult, how to speak clearly and respectfully to authority figures, and how to carry themselves with quiet confidence rather than arrogance.

Children don’t typically quit activities because they dislike the sport; they quit because they feel overlooked or unsuccessful.

Our instructional philosophy is rooted in celebrating incremental wins. Whether it’s a well executed kick, excellent focus during a drill, or earning a new stripe on their belt, we make sure every child feels seen and validated. By intentionally building these small victories into every single class, we transform martial arts from a temporary hobby into a lifelong habit.

We know trying something new can cause some butterflies, so we make day one incredibly low-pressure.

When you arrive, we’ll introduce you to the school so your child feels comfortable in the space. During class, they will join the group to learn our traditional bow-in, participate in a fun warm-up, and try out some fundamental blocks and kicks. An instructor will be right there to guide them individually, ensuring they feel successful and capable from their very first session.

  • What to wear: Just comfortable gym clothes (shorts/sweatpants and a t-shirt).

  • For the parents: We love having parents stick around! You can relax in our viewing area and watch your child build confidence in real-time. Please just arrive about 10 minutes early so we can get settled.

Our programs are highly individualized. Kids progress at their own pace, making it perfect for children who might feel overlooked in traditional team sports. Shyer kids naturally blossom as they earn their stripes and realize what they are capable of achieving.

You don’t need to buy a thing to get started. For the trial, regular athletic clothing is perfect. Once you decide to officially join the Clemson Martial Arts family, we will get your child set up with their official uniform (dobok). Down the road, as they advance in rank, we’ll introduce sparring gear, but we handle everything step-by-step so there are never any unexpected upfront costs.

Absolutely not!  Our programs are designed for participants of all skill levels, but the general expectation is that most students will be completely new to martial arts.

Absolutely not. Traditional martial arts focus heavily on self-control, discipline, and respect. We teach our students that physical skills are only for self-defense and that true strength means walking away from conflict whenever possible.

Yes, and it’s one of the most rewarding aspects of what we do at Clemson Martial Arts. However, we like to be up-front: it isn’t magic, it’s structure.

School classrooms often ask high-energy kids or children with ADHD to sit still for hours, which can lead to frustration. Our classes do the exact opposite. We combine high-energy physical output with immediate, clear goals. If a student focuses for a specific drill, they see the result instantly.

We have a long history of helping neurodivergent children, students on the spectrum, and kids who just have “too much energy” find their rhythm. The clear boundaries of the mat make them feel safe, and the steady reward of earning stripes builds an internal pride that naturally carries over into better behavior at school and home.

  • 2 Days a Week: This is our highly recommended “sweet spot” for most programs. It provides enough consistency to build muscle memory and retain skills without burning out or overwhelming your family’s weekly calendar.

  • 1 Day a Week: Once per week training is typically recommended for our Tiny Tigers.
