Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the most common questions we receive from prospective and new participants. If you have a question that is not covered here, please feel free to reach out at (864) 653-0570.
Is Kuk Sool good for martial arts beginners?
Don’t worry—most of our students started exactly where you are! Our classes are built for every fitness level, and our instructors are here to guide you at a pace that feels right for you. You’ll be in great hands from day one.
What ages can participate in Kuk Sool?
From 2-year-old Ninjas to… well, there’s no age limit! We offer a full range of classes designed for every stage of life and every skill level. Whether you’re looking for pre-Kuk Sool fun or a new adult challenge, we’ve got you covered!
Once I join, when will I receive my uniform?
New gear alert! Most programs include your uniform and training weapon right at your first class. Occasionally, we offer extended trials that let you wait until the end of the program to buy your gear. We’ll let you know exactly which one applies to you so you’re ready to hit the mat!
What if I have an injury or medical condition?
Your safety and well-being are our top priorities. If you’re managing an injury, illness, or specific health condition, just let us know! Our instructors are experts at modifying techniques and adjusting the intensity to make sure you can train safely and comfortably. If your injury/condition requires time away from training, we are happy to pause your program until you are ready to get back on the mat.
When do I get my first belt?
Ready for your first rank? Unlike later belts that require a formal invitation, your very first belt can be earned at any time! We’re looking for students who show a great attitude, respect the traditions of the school, and bring their best effort to every session. Stay focused, stay sharp, and your first promotion might be just around the corner.
How do I know when to sign up for testing?
Once you’ve earned that first belt, the real adventure begins! For our Tiny Tigers, we keep the momentum high with extra-frequent mini-promotions to celebrate every win. For all programs, your instructors will hand-deliver a special invitation the moment you’ve mastered your new skills. Want a head start? You can find all promotion requirements and helpful preparatory videos at mykuksool.com! Once you get the ‘green light,’ just hop into the MyStudio app to claim your spot for testing.
Does it cost to test for the next belt?
Yes, testing does involve a nominal fee to cover administrative expenses and the newly-earned belt.
Can I transfer my belt rank from another martial arts style?
While we value the experience you bring from other styles, ranks from other systems don’t transfer directly into Kuk Sool. Our curriculum is highly specialized with specific requirements for every belt level. This standardized approach ensures that a Kuk Sool Black Belt is recognized for the same high level of technical skill anywhere in the world.
What is a form?
A form (Hyung) is a prearranged series of movements that serves as the most important tool in your training. Beyond building muscle and stamina, forms teach your body the unique “vocabulary” and “flavor” of Kuk Sool. By practicing your Hyung, you internalize the specific techniques that define our style. Because they are so fundamental, at least one empty-hand or weapon form is required for every rank advancement.
Do you participate in tournaments?
Absolutely! Clemson Martial Arts has a storied history of competition. While we encourage students to test their skills at regional and national events, we also host our very own KickFEST twice a year! Designed to mirror the atmosphere of a major tournament, KickFEST lets you experience the thrill of competition in the supportive environment of our own dojang. It’s the perfect way to build confidence alongside your teammates, friends, and family. Interested? Ask an instructor how to get started!
My child sometimes struggles with their temper. I’m worried that learning martial arts might give them the tools to hurt others. Is this the right environment for them?
At its core, Kuk Sool is about self-mastery, not just self-defense. Here is how we support your child’s growth:
-
Mindful Etiquette: Before a student learns a single kick, they learn the “First Rule” of the dojang: respect. We emphasize that martial arts is a responsibility. Our curriculum focuses heavily on etiquette and manners, teaching children that their strength is a tool for protection and personal discipline, never for aggression.
-
A Positive Outlet: Often, what looks like a “bad temper” is simply high physical energy searching for a way out. Our classes provide a structured, high-energy environment where children can safely channel that intensity into focused movements and powerful techniques.
-
Emotional Regulation: Through breathing, focus drills, and the ritual of the class, students learn to pause and think before they react. We help them transform “reactivity” into “discipline,” giving them a sense of calm and confidence that they carry home and to school.
We don’t just teach kids how to punch and kick; we teach them how to be the masters of their own actions. We would love to have your son join us for a trial to see how our supportive community can help him thrive.
My daughter is quite shy and small for her age. I want to help her build confidence and get active, but I’m worried she might get hurt or feel overwhelmed. Is this right for her?
We hear this often, and it is exactly why so many parents choose Kuk Sool. While some children come to us to channel extra energy, many others join us to find their “voice” and discover their inner strength.
Here is how we create a safe, supportive space for your daughter to bloom:
-
No Benchwarmers: Unlike many team sports where the most “athletic” kids get all the playing time, there are no “stars” or “benchwarmers” in our dojang. Every student is on the mat for the entire class. Your daughter will never be sidelined; she is the hero of her own journey, progressing at a pace that feels safe and encouraging.
-
Safety as a Priority: We understand the fear of injury. Our curriculum is structured to be age-appropriate and progressive. We emphasize body control and coordination before moving into more dynamic movements, and our instructors provide a “safety-first” environment where students look out for one another like family.
-
Discovering Her “Best”: Traditional martial arts is incredibly diverse. Whether it’s the grace of a form, the focus of a technique, or the discipline of etiquette, every child finds an area where they naturally shine. Seeing herself succeed at a new skill is the fastest way to build genuine, lasting confidence.
-
Gentle Leadership: As your daughter becomes comfortable, we’ll slowly invite her to take on small leadership roles—like leading a few stretches or demonstrating a punch. We never push a child before they are ready, but we love watching that shy girl transform into a leader who can speak clearly and confidently in front of a group.
At Clemson Martial Arts, we believe the “black belt” mindset is about more than just physical skill; it’s about the poise, resilience, and self-assurance that will help her succeed in school and throughout her life.
Does Kuk Sool offer weapons training?
Absolutely! Weapons training is a core pillar of our system. We believe that learning to handle a weapon is an extension of mastering your own body.
Building the Foundation (Under-Black Belt) Your journey begins with Weapons Etiquette—learning the respect and safety protocols required to handle traditional tools. As you progress through the color belts, you will be introduced to:
-
Jool Bong: A flexible flail-like weapon (often called nunchucks) used to develop coordination.
-
Long Staff: You’ll master foundational spinning and striking motions.
-
Sword Meditation: Learning the discipline and focus required for sword work.
-
Short Stick: Basic striking and blocking techniques.
Mastery and Specialization (Black Belt & Beyond) Once you reach the Black Belt level, the curriculum expands into an intensive study of the four major categories of traditional weaponry.

This place is hands down the best thing I ever did for my son. He asked for more classes after 2 times of going. He never does that! Love the instructors and the reinforcement of doing your best, you can see that being taught and carried out throughout their own lives.
